Have you succumbed to the at-home haircut? Growing up, it was all I knew. However, that was just based on my mom's desire not to pay salon prices. Savannah Guthrie likely has no problem sending her kids to the salon on a normal day. But these days, she just wants her children, Vale and Charley, to be able to see without a long mane in the way.
Since most salons are still rightfully closed, parents are trying their hardest to double as stylists. And it's a hard job — that's why the professionals have to go to school for it. Savannah apparently didn't trust her own judgment when it came to the cuts. Instead, she enlisted her husband, Michael Feldman. And when you see the pictures, you'll understand that this was a wise move.
There are good and bad points to a haircut done in the home by a nonprofessional. For one, it's free. Now is also a great time to try it, because if the haircut turns out badly, it might lead to some much-needed laughter, plus no one outside of the home has to actually see it. The con is that you don't know when you'll be able to go to a professional and have it fixed. So if you accidentally cut a huge chunk, you may have to live with it for a few months.
If you still want to take the plunge, let Savannah and Michael's kids show you that it can be done right.
First, Savannah showcased a picture of her son Charley. In the caption, she described his hair as becoming somewhat "tumbleweed-esque" as it's been growing out at home. However, she had faith that he'd like what his dad would do. "As a wise man once said: “you’re gonna like the way you look," Savannah said.
Their daughter, Vale, was up next. Born in 2014, Vale has likely had her fair share of haircuts. And she probably knew that this experience would be just a little different. "Big sis gets right in for the next available appointment and gets a nice trim," Savannah said.
So it seems like a big part of this is confidence. And that's something that Savannah and her husband have plenty of. The couple have been together for over 10 years. They reportedly met at Michael's 40th birthday party, and they've been inseparable ever since.
According to Oprah Magazine, Savannah was fresh on the dating scene when they first met. "This was shortly before Guthrie announced her divorce from her husband of four years, Mark Orchard," the magazine wrote. "The couple began dating soon after Guthrie's divorce, and became engaged four years later in 2013."
It seems like it was a match made in heaven. They didn't wait to have kids and start a family. Vale was born soon after their wedding. They actually announced they were expecting during the big day, making it more memorable than either of them could have imagined.
Their wedding was reportedly attended by 80 to 90 people. It was an intimate and beautiful ceremony, made better by the big news. "Savannah looked at Mike, and said, ‘So, should we break some news? Okay. I — we — are four months pregnant!’ It was an explosive moment. Everyone was on their feet, cheering," an insider told People magazine.
It was especially big news for Savannah, who briefly thought her timeline to have kids may have been over. "I would love to have kids," she said before the news came out. "I hope so, if we’re lucky and blessed, but who knows what life holds, you know? I’m 41 years old." Luckily, they seemingly had no issues.
Vale and Charley are definitely growing up fast. Just last month, Savannah talked about how Vale often sends her texts saying that she misses her. At least with these stay-at-home orders, Vale is likely seeing her mom more than usual. The text was very sweet — it's apparent that Vale was trying to pose as her dad, especially since she was using her dad's phone.
"I miss you so much and will you come up here now Vale and I have something else for you can you tell your friends from your workplace that I miss you that I miss you and your work and I want you and I miss you and I love you bye," it read. Savannah got a kick out of the lack of punctuation.
The kids have also been a big help while Savannah works. Sometimes, they've been making guest appearances on her segments. While many anchors and newscasters have been slowly going back to the studio, Savannah made it clear early on that she planned on staying home for as long as possible.
"I’m home," she told Today cohost Hoda Kotb in April, per People. "You know, the reason, Hoda — my family is upstate, and so I’m sticking close to the family and coming to the city less and less. So I’m trying to work from home. And also, frankly, that’s what these officials are telling us to do, so that’s exactly what I’m going to do."
And it seems like her at-home situation isn't all that bad. Not only does she have more time with her kids, but she's also with her soulmate. Savannah has never been shy about her love for Michael. She's even credited him as being a fantastic father — which is probably another reason why she trusted him with those haircuts.
"When I see how Mike treats strangers, how he treasures and adores his family, how he has navigated some of the most intense and competitive work environments while never losing his honesty and grace and goodness, I feel thankful that this is the father figure our child will get to grow up watching and emulating," she said, per Oprah Magazine. She's the perfect example of someone who ended up finding love when she least expected it.
And back when she said that, she probably had no clue that he was pretty gifted with a pair of scissors. It's good to know that Vale and Charley have a great source for fabulous haircuts in case these orders last a whole lot longer. Plenty of households are likely envious of his talent right now.
