Ellen DeGeneres loves giving back and surprising deserving individuals around the world, so when she caught wind of one U.S. soldier's inspiring story, she invited him and his wife to the show for an extraordinary surprise.
In 2007, Sgt. Franz Walkup learned his soldier brother had been killed in Iraq. To honor his memory, he decided to enlist in the army to keep his memory alive. Sadly, during his second tour in Afghanistan, Walkup was critically wounded. He was shot five times by Afghan Army soldiers ambushed U.S. forces and was told he may never walk again. Franz never gave up and eventually after two years, he began to walk again.
DeGeneres knew the veteran was trying to build a wheel-chair accessible home, so she decided to give them a life-changing house warming gift: $15,000 to complete their new home in Woobury, Tennessee!
When she presented he and his wife with the surprise, they both flipped. Then, Walkup got emotional, wiping tears away from his eyes. What an amazing way to thank to our nation's defenders and veterans.
