Animals bring us such joy, no matter what age we are. From little kids to senior citizens, we can all appreciate a cute kitten or puppy.
Or…an alpaca?
"What exactly is an alpaca?" you may be asking yourself.
An alpaca is a domesticated camelid (think camels or llamas) that is know for its fine, soft fibers that make great wool and other knitted items. Apparently, they're also great for lifting spirits.
Napoleon the alpaca has made a career as a therapy animal. He visits schools, hospitals, and nursing homes to provide a fun and joyous experience to those who might need a little "pick me up."
Recently, Napoleon visited the Maryville Nursing Home in Oregon. It started as an ordinary day for the residents, but they were in for a huge treat when this large, lovable mammal came in wearing reindeer antlers and Christmas decorations. His visit delighted all of the seniors. Fortunately, someone was there to take plenty of pictures!
I love seeing all these senior citizens smiling as they pet Napoleon's soft fleece. You can tell this adorable guy really made their day.

Napoleon's owners describe him as "independent, curious, and people-friendly."
Napoleon was specially bred and trained to be a therapy animal.
He always causes a sensation when he makes his visits. The day he spent at Maryville Nursing Home was especially meaningful.
Alpaca fiber is softer than cashmere, lighter than wool, and it lacks the scratchiness that comes with wool.
Alpaca wool is even hypoallergenic.
Alpacas make great therapy animals because they naturally enjoy company.
Alpacas are herd animals. They thrive when around other alpacas, and do not do well when they are alone.
Napoleon specifically comes from a long line of strong therapy alpacas. His father's name was Marlon Brando and his grandfather's name was The Godfather.
Don't worry, alpacas don't spit nearly as often as llamas do! If an alpaca spits, it's only ever at another of its kind.
An alpaca's natural humming, or purring, is quite a calming sound.
Napoleon is available for hire if you live in the Portland area.
