Winter Storm Juno may have come and gone in the New York and New Jersey area without dumping the projected historic snowfall amounts in its wake, but that doesn't mean that conditions on the roads were perfect. In fact, even with only a mere fraction of the predicted totals landing in the area, the roads last night and this morning were still extremely messy and, at times, downright dangerous.
Take, for instance, this video of NBC News 4 New York Storm Reporter Stacey Bell doing a live report on the wintry conditions on the streets in New York and New Jersey, when things come very close to turning tragic.
After the camera pans away from Bell to give viewers a look at the road conditions on Monday night, it eventually makes its way back to the reporter. As she's finishing up her report, several cars in the background begin accelerating out of a stop as their traffic light turns green.
As Bell continues to talk, one red car looks as though it is barreling right towards the reporter. She has no idea what's happening and keeps on discussing the weather as the car luckily drifts out of the turn and pulls away from the scene, leaving a spray of snow in its wake.
Bell turns and sees the car drive away, but it's hard to tell if she knows just how close she was to being potentially very seriously injured. The footage is even more shocking because it's difficult to tell if the car went into an accidental skid or if it was someone trying to show off for the cameras by "drifting" their way through the turn.
Either way, it was a very close to call for Stacey Bell, and a good reminder that these reporters may not always have the correct predictions for weather events, but they are always willing to put their lives on the line (in this case, almost quite literally) to bring the public the news they need.
