He Falls Through The Ice On Purpose. But The Reason? My Heart Stopped!

As the winter weather rages on, it's important to be equipped with as much safety information as possible. God willing, you'll never need to put your survival skills to use — but they're extremely good to have nonetheless.

According to USA Today: "Falling through ice into the frigid waters below brings about almost instant hypothermia. In fact, your body responds to the sudden temperature drop by going into cold-water shock. That means your heart rate accelerates rapidly and you gasp for air, or hyperventilate. Just a 4-degree drop in body temperature causes hypothermia — your body loses heat faster than it can produce it … The body loses heat 32 times faster in cold water than cold air. So it's critical to get out of the water and get dry as fast as possible."

In the clip you're about to see, ABC News' Matt Gutman discovers some tips to stay alive after falling through ice into freezing water. I definitely never knew this stuff before! Did you?
