It was a cold, dark night in November of 2012 when the internet discovered that the classic snack food Twinkies would no longer be available. Judging by the reaction of folks online (who even created "11-16-12 NEVER FORGET" memes), you might think that the cream-filled snack was the world's most amazing delicacy.
A little more than six months later, Twinkies returned to the shelves of U.S. stores and people rejoiced. Children cried out in jubilation. Devoted fans flooded stores to take photos of themselves alongside the sweet treat. All, it seemed, was right in the world once again.
Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit, but people really did go a little bit crazy when they thought they might never be able to eat a Twinkie again. So what if I told you that you didn't have to rely on the fine folks that produce the 135-calorie snack to make sure you could get your Twinkie fix? What if I said you could make your own mini version right in your kitchen? You'd like that, right?
Well, thanks to PopSugar Food's latest YouTube video, that's precisely what you can do! All you need is a box of yellow cake mix and a few other ingredients to make the yummy cream filling, and you've got yourself your very own mini-Twinkies ready for the times when your sweet tooth starts aching.
Actually making the mini-Twinkies isn't all that complicated, but it will take you a little bit of time, so be sure to set some aside and pop on PopSugar's video to follow along as you make them.
First, cook your yellow cake mix in some mini-eclair molds. Then, combine your ingredients and mix up the cream filling (complete with marshmallow fluff). Finally, pipe that filling right into those Twinkies (if you can wait that long before digging in).
I don't know about you, but I feel much better knowing that I never have to worry about the almighty Twinkie ever going out of production again. I've got a backup plan!
