I love a good porch. It's the perfect place to kick back, sip some tea, and watch a thunderstorm roll in. But if there's one huge drawback to porches, it's the bugs — especially those of the stinging variety.
That's why I flipped when I saw this hornet nest. But when I found out that it wasn't teeming with terrifying insects, but rather concealing something very important, I was amazed.
In the past, we've shown you some great places to hide valuables — like hollowed-out lip balm and old medicine bottles — but this is the best idea I've seen thus far.
And unlike other hiding spots, this is one burglars or sneaky neighbors won't be brave enough to mess with. It looks so much like a nest, who would take that risk? I definitely wouldn't.
Personally, this idea is so cheap, easy, and brilliant, I can't wait to try this out myself. Will you be making one, too?

Step 1: Spray a pile of foam insulation (available at hardware stores) into the corner of a cardboard box. This will make the perfect hornet nest shape.
Step 2: Let the foam cure for about 18 hours, then tear it out of the box.
Step 3: With a normal spoon, carve out a space.
Step 4: Ensure that a set of keys will fit in the space you carved out.
Step 5: To give it an authentic look, flip it over and carve out a smaller hole. This will resemble the nest's opening.
Step 6: To make your nest look even more convincing, grab some newspapers and a blender.
Step 7: Since hornets use wood pulp to make their nests, you'll be using paper to make yours. Tear some pages into small strips, then pour in water.
Step 8: On the lowest setting, begin to blend your newspaper.
Step 9: Once the paper is blended, pour it onto a screen or mesh hamper. Use a sponge to press and drain the paper.
Step 10: Lay it out to dry — but you'll want it to remain damp so you can shape it around your foam.
Step 11: Tear and apply the sheets of paper pulp. Make layers of varied sizes and shapes.
Step 12: Ensure that the exposed side of the nest is completely covered. Don't paper the sides that will be against the wall.
Step 13: Let your pulped nest dry for about 48 hours.
Step 14: To protect it against wind and rain, spray your nest with a clear matte spray paint.
Step 15: Once your paint is dry, get out your outdoor mounting tape.
Step 16: Apply strips of the tape to the sides that be touching the wall. The mounting tape is very strong — but hopefully you won't be getting locked out all that often.
Step 17: Pick the corner where you'll stick your fake nest. A back door might be best so no one sees you mounting it.
Step 18: Stick the nest in the corner. Ensure it's in there nice and tight.
Step 19: Step back, admire your work, and never get locked out again! Worried about burglars learning this trick? This key holder looks so much like a hornets' nest, they'll be too scared to risk knocking it down!
