Lucy wouldn't be the first kitten to survive unimaginable odds, but her story is unlike anything in recent memory.
Earlier this week, a 12-week-old kitten named Lucy was found left in a dumpster in the Southeast area of Portland, Oregon, reports Oregon Live. She had suffered two .22-caliber gunshot wounds to her head and neck, and she was immediately rushed to the Oregon Humane Society (OHS) for medical care. Remarkably, Lucy survived the ordeal and is now being cared by OHS while she recovers.
"In cases involving such a young animal with possible neurological damage, we must remain cautious, but we are optimistic that Lucy will make a full recovery," said Dr. Jacqueline Blanchette, one of the OHS staff who treated Lucy, in a press release from the OHS.
Unsurprisingly, there has been an outpour of support in the Portland area as the community works together to bring Lucy justice. OHS says a $5,000 reward is being offered for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the culprit of the crime. OHS will be donating $2,500 to the cause, which will be matched by Portland's Animal Legal Defense Fund.
“Anyone who can engage in such a violent and depraved act presents a huge risk to our community,” said Scott Heiser, Director of the Animal Legal Defense Fund’s Criminal Justice Program, said in the press release. “That person needs to be off the streets and held fully accountable. That is why we are joining forces with Oregon Humane Society to increase the reward in this case.”
OHS asks any information to be directed to (503) 285-7722, ext. 214.
