Unlike a lot of my coworkers who live in Manhattan, I'm out in the suburbs, and I'm fortunate enough to spend a lot of time in my backyard doing fun home improvement projects.
Our team at LittleThings recently had a discussion about fire pits and why they are so popular, and I was shocked to hear that I was the only one who had one at home. I was able to make a really great one in my own backyard, without having to spend big bucks to buy one. However, what's so great about the one we learn to make in the following video is that you can make it anywhere and it's such a great size you can have it anywhere, too…even in the big city!
Unlike my fire pit, which uses wood to burn, the one in this tutorial uses gel fuel cans, so they'll never change in appearance or have to be replaced. According to the creator of this YouTube video, Jeff Patterson, you'll also need these supplies: some cheap plastic bowls for about $5, Pam Grilling Spray, Quikrete Quick-Setting Cement, a margin trowel, a bucket, a palm sander, a grout sponge, 60 and 150 grit sandpaper, lava rocks, and the gel fuel cans.
He uses the plastic bowls and quick setting cement to make the fire pit bowl in just about 5-6 hours. Then he adds in the safe lava rocks and gel fuel cans, which can be found in a garden center or hardware store. This video may look a little complicated, but it's a great project to complete one rainy afternoon…you'll be happy you did on those chilly summer nights!
Once you're finished, this fire pit bench would make another great addition if you have room for it!
