A lot of people are getting into at-home fitness these days, but not everyone wants to turn their garage into a gym (or even has a garage to convert in the first place). That means plenty of people are coming up with creative ways to exercise at home, and a new one is definitely taking off: childhood games!
Adults were already reintroducing themselves to childhood games like flag football and kickball before the health crisis, but now that many of us are spending extended time social distancing from others, a lot of those options have gone out the window. In their stead, many adults are picking up hula hoops and jump ropes and even drawing hopscotch boards with chalk on their driveways and sidewalks.
Here are a few ideas for childhood games that are socially distant and pretty easy to do at home.
Hula Hooping for Adults
Adults have been into hooping for years, but the trend has really taken off lately. It makes sense: All you need is a large hoop and an able body and you're set!
Of course, it can be tricky to know which size hoop to get. Kid-size hula hoops will not work for most adults, and hooping pros suggest that adults should look for hoops that come up to approximately their belly buttons (or even higher).
Try these:
- RecGurus Weighted Hula Hoop (Amazon, $19.94)
–Weighted Hula Hoops for Adults (Amazon, $31)
Jump Ropes for Adults
I reintroduced myself to jumping rope late last year, and I was flat-out stunned by how winded I became after only a minute of jumping! But the exercise is pretty fun, and it's something you can do on your own inside or outside your home.
Jumping rope is a great cardio workout, if that kind of thing is your goal. If not, it's just pretty fun to do!
If you don't have any specific goals in mind besides just having fun, you can choose just about any jump rope. Here are a few:
- Jump Ropes for Fitness (Amazon, $11.99)
- YZL Adjustable Jump Rope (Amazon, $4.98)
Other Exercise Options Inspired by Childhood Games
There are still plenty of other ideas out there for adult exercise that are inspired by childhood games:
- Balloon ball: You only need one balloon to toss around and hit with your limbs to keep it in the air. It's fun to play solo or with someone else!
- Freeze dance: Put on your favorite songs and dance it out, and when they stop, freeze!
- Hall bowling: Fill up a bunch of reusable water bottles and bowl away!
