When you were in school, were you one of the kids who had the same name as four other children in your class? Or were you the kid who had a unique name that teachers could never pronounce? Either way, you may have been left with a love of unusual names or a preference for mainstream monikers. You may even be a parent (or about to become a parent) and are curious about what kind of names are common these days and which ones aren't the top choices around. In that case, you would surely be interested in the fact that "Stacker compiled a list of names that are on their way out or at the bottom of their popularity cycle, using the Social Security Administration's historical archives of baby names," according to the Chicago Tribune.
We've also looked at Baby Name Wizard's list of popular baby names in the US from 2019 and compared it to Stacker's 2021 list to track down a few more names that were once everywhere but are about to lose popularity.
Cortney (for a Girl) and Courtney (for a Boy)
Hunter
Those who love the outdoors or like a bit of a hard-core vibe might be into the name Hunter. But there will be fewer and fewer Hunters around in the coming years, as it's not as popular as it used to be.
Savannah
"Derived from the Spanish savannah (a treeless plain)," according to Baby Name Wizard, Savannah is also a city in Georgia, of course. And while the location is still popular for many reasons, the name is becoming a less-popular choice when it comes to parents naming their children.
Jaxson
Jaxson is definitely an interesting way to put a fun twist on the classic name Jackson or even Jack. Honestly, adding an "x" to a name is always pretty darn cool. However, parents of newborns might want to stick with the old-school spelling, as Jaxson isn't as popular as it was a few years ago.
Skylar
Skylar "might be based on sky or perhaps on the name of the Isle of Skye, an island off the coast of Scotland," Baby Name Wizard explains. If you're Scottish or have a Scottish background (or just like anything Scottish), then you might want to consider Skylar for your baby's name. That is, if you're looking for something that's a little more unique (aka less popular) these days.
Brandon
Brandon saw a resurgence in popularity in 2019 after becoming a favorite in the Beverly Hills, 90210 days. Although it can also be spelled as Branden or Brandyn, even the different versions of the same name can't save this moniker from passing its peak and losing its former popular status.
Kennedy
Kennedy is another name that would suit either a little girl or a little boy, which is surely one of the reasons why it's been a popular choice for parents in the past. However, when it comes to actually naming baby girls Kennedy, fewer moms and dads are now leaning that way.
Nathan
When it comes to popularity, the name Nathan peaked back in 2005, with 3,457 babies given that moniker per million little ones born in the US, according to Baby Name Wizard. But it has lost mainstream momentum recently and is about to lose its spot on the most popular name lists.
Candice
There are plenty of versions of Candice, like Candace, Kandace, Kandice, and even Candyse. If this is a name that you've been considering for your new baby, then you might want to opt for the latter, more unusual options, because the first version isn't among the popular choices anymore.
Josiah
If you know someone named Josiah, he might be the last person with that name that you come across for a while. Although it was a popular name that found a groove in 2012, it's not quite capturing the interest of parents right now.
Kristy
Do you prefer Kristy, Kristi, or Kristie? What about Christy, Christi, or Christie? While there are clearly a few options if this is a name that you think would suit your little one, it turns out that it's a choice that used to be a lot more popular than it is now — whichever version you're thinking of.
Logan
These days, Logan Paul is one of the most famous people who happen to have that first name. He's also someone who's known for causing controversy. Could that be one of the reasons why the name Logan is losing its popularity? You never know!
Lori
Laurie is definitely a more common version of the name Lori. However, neither are among the more popular choices right now when it comes to names for newborn girls. Granted, there's always Laura, Lauren, or Lorelei.
Bradley
There are plenty of stars named Bradley. Just think about Bradley Cooper and Bradley Whitford, as well as celebs who prefer to use the shorter version of the moniker, like Brad Paisley and Brad Pitt. But it doesn't look like these famous Bradleys are inspiring many parents to choose it for their little ones anymore, as it's losing popularity.
Dawn
Dawn is an adorable name for a little girl. Invoking thoughts of a new day and all the possibilities that come with it, it's a name that's filled with hope and new beginnings. However, despite the fact that it was once an option that a fair share of parents picked for their daughters, it's not that way these days.
Don
While Dawn is a name that's not as popular for girls right now, the same goes for Don when it comes to a name for boys. That can also be said for a version of Don that might be a little more casual or slightly more playful: Donnie.
Michele
Michele is a name that hit its popular status peak in the 1960s, according to Baby Name Wizard. However, it's managed to remain a favorite among parents for years since. And yet it looks like this name is finally about to fall out of favor.
Tracy (for a Boy)
Stephanie
Did you know that Lady Gaga's real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta? Her parents obviously opted for Stefani with an "f" and no "e" as opposed to Stephanie</a>; however, that might not be something that moms and dads care too much about, as it's not a name that's as popular as it once was.
Rick
The name Rick may have piqued parents' interest when they heard it on The Walking Dead (yes, some parents are willing to find inspiration for names on a zombie show). But now that the character has (spoiler) left the main series, the name is losing its allure.
Addison
Addison Rae found fame as one of the most popular TikTok stars around. Sadly, for anyone who loves the name Addison, her success hasn't helped give the name a boost in popularity. In fact, it's becoming a less-popular choice when it comes to parents naming their little ones.
Clint
Clint is a name that found its highest level of popularity in the 1970s, according to Baby Name Wizard. Perhaps thanks to Clint Eastwood? However, it's a name that seems to be aging alongside the iconic actor and hasn't found a fan base among younger parents.
Breanne
If you know someone whose name is Breanne and they're the kind of person who likes to stand out, then they're in luck. That's because as time has gone on, the popular name is becoming more unusual.
Sawyer
Do you know a boy Sawyer? Or perhaps you know a girl Sawyer. The name was a popular choice for girls in 2010, and it was a name that parents were more likely to choose for a boy in 2012. Although now it's becoming less popular for both.
Kinsley
Although Kinsley comes from "Kings meadow," according to Baby Name Wizard, it's a name that's often given to little queens and princesses (that is, any little girl who is seen as a royal darling to their parents). However, any moms and dads who are looking for regal inspiration are more likely to look for other options these days.
Brooks
If you're active in Bachelor Nation, then you'll know that Bachelor in Paradise alum Jade Roper Tolbert let her Instagram followers choose her baby's name by voting on choices that went up against each other until there was a winner (like a sports bracket). When it came to her first son, who was born in 2019, the popular choice was Brooks. We have to wonder if Jade's fans would have chosen that name now, considering the fact that it's not as popular anymore.
Caroline
Caroline is a traditional name, a classic name, and even a royal name. It's also a name that has gained and lost popularity throughout the years. What it isn't is a name that's still popular among parents choosing a moniker for their daughters these days.
Maddox
Angelina Jolie brought the name Maddox into the spotlight when she adopted a son in 2002 and gave him that very name. In turn, it became such a popular choice that both boys and girls started popping up as Maddox. While it stayed that way for years, its popularity is now finally starting to wane.
Brooklyn (for a Girl)
Brooklyn is a borough of New York City, Brooklyn is a famous Beckham family member, and Brooklyn used to be a popular name for girls. It's also a name that fewer parents are choosing for their newborn daughters.
Paris (for a Boy)
Paris is a city in France, Paris is a famous Hilton family member, and Paris used to be a popular name for a boy. However, just like Brooklyn is no longer as popular for girls, Paris is no longer popular for boys. Sorry, Shakespeare!
