I am from Florida, and in the Sunshine State, backyards are a big deal.
For instance, if you’re invited over to someone’s house for am outdoor shindig — which is often — you can tell right away what kind of party you’re in for just by their back lawn style. A rose garden, trellises, and a self-made pond meant you were going to have an elegant brunch with interesting conversation, while a pool, barrel barbecue, tiki hut, and self-built privacy wall meant a ruckus good time.
Whatever your style, the best thing about having a plot of grass to call your own is that you can customize it your little slice of paradise to reflect who you are. The best way to do this is with a DIY project you’re truly passionate about.
Reddit user, onekneedown, did exactly that. He envisioned the yard of his dreams and made it so with a remarkable, inspiring, and stunning DIY project that is truly unique. It combines everything you’d ever want in a yard. It the perfect place to unwind and relax, fantastic for entertaining, and has a wow-factor you need to see to believe…
The first thing they did was measure out a hexagon and marked where a few posts would go.
Each post needed a three-foot deep hole that was wide enough to set ten-foot, 6x6" treated posts. This one is the perfect size for this kind of project — as well as being a perfect place for this pooch, named Klaus, to hide some bones.
Their soil was extremely rocky. They had a very hard time digging without “running into baseball size rocks,” onekneedown said. “Or bigger. Much bigger.” Like this one, which turned out to be “a 200-pound behemoth that we ended up pulling out of the hole with a truck.”
Next, they did some surface prep by removing sod, roots, and rocks.
Once the holes and the land were ready for posts, it was time to put in them in. They ended up using around 16 bags of quickset concrete.
They made sure each post was plumb and level before setting them with concrete.
Once the posts were installed, it was time to move on to the next step.
They used a chainsaw and made a few pieces for the top of the posts.
Large lag screws were used to secure the top pieces to the posts.
Once the main top supports were up, they cut and screwed in treated 2x6's inside the hexagon for additional stability.
They put down Preen pellets and then weed guard to keep the unwanted greenery away.
Gravel and sand were laid down next.
