Thank goodness for alert drivers. Not just because they make for safe driving conditions, but because they're often the ones who spot animals in need.

They can see a kitten in need on the highway and rush to help in whatever way they can.

One man, Reddit user belleayreski2, was driving when he noticed a tiny head poking out of a storm drain.

When he pulled over to check it out, he realized it was a cat. But he also quickly realized she wasn't alone — she's a mama cat that was protecting her baby.

The two were tucked away in the storm drain and didn't seem intent on making friends. So belleayreski2 went to the nearest store to pick up some canned cat food, hoping to get the pair to trust him and lure them out.

Luckily, the canned food worked, and the two came out of their hiding spot!

After getting out of his car, Reddit user belleayreski2 discovered this mama cat hiding in the storm drain with her baby behind her.

"I really thought they would be more shy or aggressive. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be to get them out of the drain," he told Love Meow.

That same day he took the mama cat and her little one home with him to help them get settled in a new life.

He even gave them a bath without any fights or hissing.

Sadly, he believes the mama and her baby were abandoned, as they both were in pretty good health with decent and clear fur.

Thankfully, he was willing to become their new human! He got them to a vet, then named the mama cat River and the little boy Scout.

River and Scout made themselves at home fast, with a lot of help. They now have eight cat shelves to jump and play around on! Even though they have plenty of space, these two still love to cuddle each other.

The mama cat and Scout look very happy in their new home!
