Bad neighbors are the worst, you know? Especially terrible neighbors who are always playing music too loudly, neighbors who never stop shooting fireworks no matter what time of the year it is, neighbors who move away and leave their dog with you, or neighbors who … cause a roach infestation that's so bad it bleeds over from their home to yours.
One woman has taken to Reddit to detail the nightmare neighbors she and her husband have been dealing with for the last six years. She notes that the last three years have been particularly horrifying.
"The family consists of a married couple, their two children, and the mother of the husband. It started out with little things: the whole family speaking at a volume of yelling at all times, the youngest boy coming to our backyard and looking into our sliding door for our dog, or the boy coming up on our porch during deliveries and smelling our food."
She notes that the two boys appear to be on the autism spectrum, so some behavior is absolutely OK. But it's what their parents are getting up to that has really caused a lot of issues.
She continues, "Then their dog started being left alone outside and leaving large piles of poop on our front yard. We call the association and police. I would walk their dog back to their house and tell them as well that I would be filing a complaint."
"Progressively things started getting bad. We have narrow parking spots in front of the complex and they would always park grossly over the line and make it difficult for everyone to park their car. One time both the wife parked so over the line into her spot, the husband couldn't get into his so they just parked in our neighbor's spot."
She also says that they've called authorities on the family, but it hasn't helped:
"We would continuously call the association and the police regarding parking issues due to them. The husband hit our neighbor's car in front of him and blamed it on his mother who agreed to the blame (bizarre). They would leave bags of garbage out for wild animals to tear into and scatter across everyone's lawns. We called many times regarding this as well."
And it sounds like the husband of the family is even dangerous:
"They also took a door and rug and threw it into the woods behind our house like a dump (again, called the police on this one). One night about a year ago, the husband was taken away and not seen again until the last few weeks. He was arrested for raping his wife and an emergency order was put in place."
"Garbage was pouring out their front and back doors and the house smelled. I called CPS on them and was told there was nothing to investigate.
“A few weeks ago, the youngest child was finally taken into custody. The social worker stated their house was the most disgusting house they’ve ever seen. Following that, the mom moved out to a local hotel and her husband started making appearances again. He started cleaning out the house and again leaving garbage everywhere.”
So the whole story is really horrific, but the garbage is where things really begin to take a turn for you're-never-coming-back-from-this-experience:
"We started noticing roaches here and there. I told my husband I had no question as to where this was coming from and urged him to call the association. Other neighbors started reporting the same issues too. My husband called the association who said they knew it was coming from that owner and that they would send out an exterminator to every attached unit and charge it to them. The next day Orkin stopped by and my husband caught him outside. He assumed the association had sent him but apparently the husband had called for his unit. Orkin went into their unit and within 5 minutes came out and told my husband 'there’s nothing he can do. The city needs to come out and condemn the unit and it needs to be gutted'. I was horrified."
"My husband called the association and they instructed him to call the city inspector. The city inspector came out and told my husband all he could do was cite us for the complaint. My husband begged him to go look at the other unit and to just walk over there and he did not."
"When I came home from work, I walked over to their unit and there were roaches crawling on the outside of their door and porch walls!! I am beyond horrified. The exterminator came out and sprayed all the units but it has been worse since then. We also found out from the exterminator that the association had sent them out to that unit twice in the last 2 years meaning they knew this was an issue for two years and failed to inform us."
Now she and her husband are living with roaches all the time:
"Since the exterminator came, I see roaches daily. I see them in the living room, kitchen, and tonight on my front door and porch. I feel like I'm living in a horror movie. I can't live next to this filth and this is so unacceptable. I'm crying as I write this because I'm at my wits end. I feel like we have been complaining about these people for years and have more than 40 emails to the association about this. No one did anything and now it's too late."
She says that they'd like to move, but aren't sure if they can:
"My husband and I went and looked at some new construction homes away from this place but I know if we sell we will have to disclose. We have put so much money into all new energy-efficient windows, new cabinets and counters, new water heater, furnace, and air conditioning. I feel like we're going to lose everything we put into this place. I hate these people more than I've ever hated anything."
In conclusion: The next time you think your neighbors are awful, remind yourself of this story. That is, if you even made it to the end. No one will think of less of you if you couldn't … because this story is most definitely not for the faint of heart.
