Actress, producer, and host of her very own talk show, Drew Barrymore celebrated her 46th birthday yesterday. The host celebrated on The Drew Barrymore Show with a super-fun episode. It was pretty amazing because the producers of the show decided it would be fun if Drew didn't have any idea what was going to happen that day. She didn't know whom she would interview or really, anything at all!
So it was full of a lot of surprises, like blasts from Drew's past, celebrity friends, and a special surprise from the loves of Drew's life — her daughters.
All in all, it seemed like Drew had a great birthday. But it might've made for even better TV.
Drew Barrymore has done so many amazing things in her 46 years. Not only has she had an incredible career in acting, she also made one of the best comebacks Hollywood has ever seen. Drew catapulted to fame after starring in E.T. as a little girl. But quickly, the pressures of young stardom got to Drew. She didn't have a strong family support system, and she began partying at a young age.
After spending time in rehab and writing a tell-all memoir at just 13, Drew wanted to return to acting. But she wasn't taken seriously. She got laughed out of auditions and turned away over and over. She had to dig in her heels and prove herself. While so many child stars never see success as adults, Drew was too determined to stay down for long.
Drew's fierce determination paid off. She started landing roles in films like Poison Ivy, Boys on the Side, and Bad Girls. Quickly, she was earning respect as a talented young woman onscreen. Off-screen, people admired her for her tenacity and her free spirit.
Later on, Drew rocked the rom-com world with movies like 50 First Dates and Fever Pitch. And she started her own production company, Flower Films. It seemed like there wasn't anything Drew couldn't do.
Drew clearly thrives on being busy. These days, she certainly has a full schedule. She's mom to Frankie and Olive, whom she shares with ex-husband Will Kopelman. She still has Flower Films, as well as her cosmetics line, Flower Beauty, and now she has her very own talk show. It's a whole lot more than most people could handle, but Drew seems to be happy and thriving.
She's such an incredible talent and a truly special person. It makes sense that her first birthday as a talk show host would be a big one. And Drew's staff did not disappoint when it came to the surprises and celebrations.
The episode featured former talk show host David Letterman, whom Drew is close with. The two reminisced about the time a younger Drew danced on David's desk and flashed him.
Drew's stand-in "dad," Steven Spielberg, also stopped by (virtually). He shared the cute fatherly story of having his artists create and paste clothing onto Drew's Playboy cover, then sending her the copy. "Because that's what parents do!" Drew chimed in. Drew adorably sent him back photos of her in a nun's costume, which he still has today.
Cameron Diaz also came to hang. She and Drew have been longtime buds since they starred in Charlie's Angels together. Cameron and Drew revealed their secret and hilarious language on the show.
Drew doesn't show her daughters' faces on social media, and they didn't appear in the video. Instead, it was an adorable illustrated video with super-cute rhymes. In it, the girls told Drew they loved her and that she was the best mom in the world. Drew was extremely emotional, and as the clip played, she laughed as well as cried.
Drew definitely appeared to have a very special birthday. And she deserved it. She's one of the most hardworking and authentic women in Hollywood. Not only that, Drew is a one-of-a-kind mom, and it's clear that she values being a parent more than just about anything.
