15 Extraordinarily Bold, Beautiful, And Controversial Celeb Looks From The 2021 Met Gala

The 2021 Met Gala happened on September 13, and as per usual, people were focused on the outfits that those on the guest list chose for the big day.

So, what is the Met Gala? Also known as the Met Ball or the Costume Institute Gala or the Costume Institute Benefit, it's an elite fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City. Each year, a theme is announced that celebrities try to incorporate into their looks.

This year, the theme was "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion." Some celebrities took that literally. Others? Well, they might have missed the ball entirely. Here are 15 of the many standout looks that made the event extra special this year.

1. Kim Kardashian

By far, one of the most "what's happening?" moments at the gala happened when Kim Kardashian walked in. She wore all black to the event, even covering her face. According to Vogue, she sported a Balenciaga haute couture gown with matching mask and train. She also walked in with Balenciaga designer Demna Gvasalia.

2. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who's often known simply as AOC, made sure to make a statement with her gown. The US representative from New York wore a Brother Vellies gown with the words "Tax the Rich" on the back.

"When we talk about supporting working families and when we talk about having a fair tax code, oftentimes this conversation is happening among working and middle class people (on) the senate floor," she said, per CNN. "I think it's time we bring all classes into the conversation."

3. Billie Eilish

Singer Billie Eilish wasn't afraid to get a little bold. She wore a huge ballgown that was reportedly inspired by Marilyn Monroe, and she let her confidence shine throughout the entire event. The dress was made by Oscar de la Renta, and it made Billie feel really good.

"It just was time," she told E! News. "It was time for this, and I feel like I've grown so much in the last few years."

4. Lil Nas X

This is Lil Nas X's year to shine. And he did so — literally — at the Met Gala. His entire outfit included a few layers. After removing first an extravagant gold cape and then a golden suit of armor, he revealed a bodysuit decked out in crystals and a Versace print. This was his first Met Gala, but chances are it won't be his last.

5. Dan Levy

Dan Levy proved that he's all about the puffy sleeves. This was his first year at the event, and he chose to collaborate with Loewe’s Jonathan Anderson and Cartier to get the look just right. He admitted that he's usually not one for galas, but he knew what an honor it was to get invited.

"I'm a pretty introverted person, and I tend to avoid big parties, so this is really taking a big step out of my comfort zone," he confessed to Vanity Fair.

6. Sudha Reddy

Sudha Reddy's jaw-dropping flag dress was made by Falguni Shane Peacock. The wife of billionaire businessman Megha Krishna Reddy was the only Indian who attended the event, which is a sign that perhaps the guest list could benefit from more diversity. Her gown reportedly took 250 hours to make, which is both shocking and not so shocking when you see the finished product.

7. Amandla Stenberg

Actress and singer Amandla Stenberg chose to dazzle the crowd in black and white. Even more gorgeous than their dress was their hair, styled by Vernon François. The corset and tailcoat were reportedly from Thom Browne. Altogether, the look is quite stunning.

8. Kendall Jenner

Kendall seemingly took a completely different approach than her sister Kim. While Kim was covered up, Kendall chose the "barely there" look. She wore a Givenchy Haute Couture gown over a corset bodysuit, and she looked spectacular. According to People, she was hoping to channel Audrey Hepburn with the look.

9. Maisie Williams

Maisie Williams dazzled in a gown that was reportedly designed by her boyfriend, Reuben Selby. Reuben used inspiration from The Matrix to complete his vision. If Maisie's ever looking for a quick Halloween costume, this could serve as a great last-minute replacement.

10. Ella Emhoff

Ella Emhoff looked glorious in red, and nobody was more proud of the star than her mom. "She is beautiful! Proud Mama!" Kerstin Emhoff tweeted. The 22-year-old stepdaughter of Vice President Kamala Harris wore Cartier jewels and Stella McCartney Eyewear to complete her overall look.

11. Emily Blunt

Emily Blunt channeled the Statue of Liberty in her ensemble for the big night. Emily chose a sparkly Miu Miu gown and added a cape to make the look a bit more dramatic. But it's the headpiece that pulls the entire look together.

12. Zoë Kravitz

Zoë Kravitz took a similar approach to Kendall Jenner and rocked the "barely there" look at the Met Gala. Her dress might not be what most of us would choose for a work event, but she took the theme and made the most of it. She wore a bedazzled Saint Laurent mesh halter gown and had a matching thong to fully bring the look together. For jewelry, she chose diamond earrings by Jessica McCormack.

13. Jordan Alexander

Jordan Alexander knows how special a pop of color can be. The Gossip Girl actress nailed her very first Met Gala by wearing a corseted Christopher John Rogers gown that was bright and fun. She truly stood out and seemed to have fun with the theme this year.
