A woman in Spain has died after a cosmetic procedure went horribly wrong. Now her family wants the surgeon to pay for the disastrous results of the seemingly neglectful operation.
Sara Gomez, a 39-year-old mother of two, died in the hospital after a $6,500 liposuction operation that ended up costing her much more — her life. Sara was left in a terrible condition with holes in most of her major organs before she died on Saturday.
There was clearly some extreme neglect in this case, and now police say they are worried the surgeon may be trying to flee the country. They have launched an investigation into the clinic.
Sara Gomez was hospitalized on December 2 and spent a month in intensive care, but she was not able to recover from her injuries. It's confounding for the family, who was told by the unnamed surgeon, according to the Olive Press, that “everything went well” but she had lost a lot of fluid. The surgeon said they were working to stabilize her.
Hours later, her condition grew grave. She was rushed to the Hospital General Universitario Santa Lucia. She was in hypovolemic shock.
The woman's family is heartbroken at what happened to her, but they are also outraged. Her brother called the horrific incident an "extreme reality." Her injuries were indeed extensive. The mom of two was left with holes in her organs, including her kidney, liver, duodenum, colon, and intestines.
The family's lawyer, Ignacio Martinez, says the injuries were “more typical of the result of a knife fight.” He added that he sees many cosmetic surgery cases, but “what happened here is incomprehensible.”
Sara leaves behind two children, a son and a daughter.
