Drew Barrymore just opened up about how hard it is to try to date as a single mom. I think I speak for every single mom out there when I say, "Drew, we totally feel you."
On a new episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Drew sat down with Queer Eye star Bobby Berk. Drew almost immediately became emotional. When Bobby inquired as to why, the actress shook her head and started tearing up.
"I don't know how to date with kids," she said through sobs.
Drew's emotions were clearly right on the surface. And it's certainly understandable. Dating as a single mom can be so hard to navigate. While it seems like Drew definitely wants a connection, she doesn't feel like she knows where to begin.
"I'm not there yet. I have two young girls and I'm like I don't want to bring people home," she said. "I think that it would take me a very long time to meet someone and get to know them before I could even ever introduce them to my daughters."
In a segment on CBS This Morning, Drew opened up about the emotional exchange even more. She also shared that while her ex-husband Will Kopelman is happily remarried, the two have had very different approaches toward dating. As for Drew, she says she's only just begun making efforts to meet people in the past two years. Until then, she just didn't feel ready. While she's happy for her ex, she also revealed that she feels like she's "been on the sidelines in a beautiful, honoring purgatory."
The conversation was powerful and highlighted a lot of the issues that come up for single moms when trying to date. It's not just a matter of when to introduce someone to your kids, but there's also scheduling conflicts and making sure someone is a good fit for you at such a unique time in your life. There are just so many stressors on single moms. Drew is totally correct in her assumption that it's not something a lot of people are truly prepared to embrace.
For Drew, the conversation ended up being meaningful. "I had never realized and said out loud that I don't know how to date with kids," she shared. Now that Drew has really started making efforts and hasn't yet found a connection, it seems like she's feeling the weight of what she's missing.
Drew's daughters are now 7 and 9. The actress and talk show host says she's been single for six years. While that time seems to have been incredibly well spent, as she's thrown herself into her work and being a mom, Drew definitely wants some romance in her life.
One thing Drew really nailed was just how brave you have to be in order to keep putting yourself out there. Anyone who has dated after having kids knows just how true that is. We're hoping that for Drew, her bravery pays off soon enough.
