A 24-year-old is lucky to be alive after suffering a rare condition after taking a spin class.
Spin classes are known to be intense. They're meant to push you to your limit. But Kaelyn Franco never expected her body to respond the way it did. At the end of the 45-minute workout, her legs felt wobbly. She could barely walk. But the next day, she felt like she was paralyzed.
Kaelyn headed straight to the hospital, and it's a good thing she did. It turned out she had a rare condition called rhabdomyolysis. The condition can occur when muscle tissue is so damaged that it releases proteins and electrolytes into the blood, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The condition could have killed her. It also could have very well taken her leg. Thankfully, an emergency operation saved her limb as well as her life.
Kaelyn was wheelchair-bound, but now she's learning to walk with a cane. Her roommate still has to help her get around. It's hardly what she anticipated when she walked into her very first spin class months ago.
