A Russian model who disappeared after sharing an anti-Putin rant on social media has been found dead.
Gretta Vedler went missing in spring 2021 after sharing a rant online where she called Russian President Vladimir Putin a "psychopath." There were concerns that a series of social media posts that slammed Putin and his desire to expand Russia is what led to her disappearance, but now police have the answers.
Gretta's death wasn't a part of a political agenda, according to Russia's Investigative Committee. Instead, the 23-year-old model's ex-boyfriend, Dmitry Korovin, has confessed to her murder.
Gretta's loved ones worried that her outspoken political beliefs on social media could have landed her in hot water with the government. The beliefs she shared seem particularly eerie in light of current world events.
"Given the fact that Putin went through a lot of humiliation in childhood, he could not stand up for himself due to his [slight] physical form, it is not surprising that he left after law school and joined the KGB," she wrote.
"Such people are timid and fearful from childhood, afraid of noise and darkness, strangers, so traits such as caution, restraint, and lack of communication are developed early in their character," she continued.
"I can only assume, in my opinion, a clear psychopathy or sociopathy is seen in him. For psychopaths, it is important to constantly experience a sense of fullness and sharpness of life, so they love risk, intense experiences, intense communication, intense activity – an intense and dynamic life."
"Maybe he really wants to enhance the integrity of Russia and sincerely wishes the good for the Russians. But can he really do anything?" she continued.
“I think you know the answer to this question yourself."
Just a few weeks after these comments, Gretta went missing. Speculation as to what happened can now be laid to rest, however, as her remains have been found and her murderer arrested. Gretta's corpse was found stuffed in a suitcase. Her ex-boyfriend, Dmitry Korovin, has confessed to her murder.
Korovin claims he and Gretta got into an argument over money. When the disagreement got heated, he strangled her to death. He then slept in a hotel room for three nights with her corpse before buying a suitcase to discreetly get it out of the hotel.
Korovin told investigators he then drove 300 miles to Lipetsk with the suitcase. He left it in the trunk of a car for a year. In the interim, he continued posting on Gretta's social media accounts so no one would get suspicious.
Evgeniy Foster, a male friend of Gretta's, became suspicious, however. Living in Ukraine, he was unable to do anything about those suspicions on his own. He eventually made contact with a friend in Moscow, who filed a missing person's report. The search led to the discovery of Gretta's body and Korovin's confession.
