New details have emerged in the death of 16-year-old Kailia Posey, best known for her time on the TLC reality show Toddlers & Tiaras and for becoming a viral meme dubbed "the grinning girl."
According to a statement shared with TMZ by her family, Kailia died by suicide.
"Although she was an accomplished teenager with a bright future ahead of her, unfortunately in one impetuous moment, she made the rash decision to end her earthly life," the family's statement read. "She won countless crowns & trophies after competing on the pageant circuit her entire life … Her highly acclaimed talent as a contortionist had already led to professional touring job offers, and she had recently been selected to be a cheerleader at her high school next fall."
News of Kailia's death broke on May 3 when her mother wrote of it in a heartbreaking Facebook post. "I don't have words or any thoughts. A beautiful baby girl is gone," she wrote.
Shortly after, reports that there may have been an accident that led to her death began circulating. Now we know that that was not the case and that Kailia took her own life.
Kailia had many talents. She was a trained contortionist and wanted to be a commercial pilot after high school. But she will forever be remembered as the grinning girl, smiling ear to ear in that viral meme, by so many.
