The trial of British nurse Lucy Letby continues in the United Kingdom. In addition to being accused of killing at least seven infants in her care, Letby has further been accused of force-feeding another baby to a dangerous degree.
It's believed that Letby was attempting to kill this infant, who is referred to as Infant G in the trial, while the nurse who was caring for her was on lunch break.
On-call NICU consultant Dr. Stephen Breary told the court that Infant G was born prematurely and weighed only 1 pound at the time of her birth. He said the child had been improving until he was suddenly called back to the NICU to check on her.
The infant had a "very large projectile vomit" in the early hours of the morning on September 7, 2022. Dr. Breary explained, "This was not something I had witnessed before."
As the BBC reported, expert witness Dr. Dewi Evans told the court: "I can't recall a baby vomiting as far as the floor, I certainly can't recall a baby vomiting that distance. It is quite extraordinary, there is something very, very unusual going on for [Infant G] to throw up in this way."
Dr. Evans testified that the infant had been given far more milk than she should have through her nasal tube, and that the infant suffered from irreversible brain damage as a result.
A nurse also testified that when she arrived to assist Letby with the infant, she noticed a monitor had been turned off, which was "not normal protocol."
Infant G has since been diagnosed with quadriplegic cerebral palsy as a result of the brain damage she suffered.
