A shooting took place in New York City's Times Square in 2021. During the frightening incident, a 4-year-old girl was shot. But thanks to one fast-moving NYPD officer, Alyssa Vogel, the little girl is going to be just fine.
Officer Vogel has been called a hero after she sprung into action to rescue the child, who had been shot in the leg. A video captured the officer's brave actions. In the footage, you can see her snatch up the wounded little girl and run through the crowds of people to get her to safety.
Vogel said she heard reports of shots fired on 45th Street and Broadway. Two officers were treating others who had been shot and told her that a "baby up the block" had been shot, too. With that, she took off running. "I was just looking at her and just saying like if this was my kid I would be running her myself to the hospital or the ambulance."
Footage from the officer's bodycam also shows Officer Vogel using a tourniquet to stop the child's leg from bleeding. Once it was secure, she ran as fast as she could with the child in her arms. The footage is undoubtedly moving to watch. But Vogel says she was just doing her job.
Vogel says that she learned from her father, brother, and husband, who are all police officers. But she also credits something else with her heroic actions: new motherhood. Vogel had become a mom just six months before. She says that when she saw the wounded child, those motherly instincts kicked in.
