A mother turned to Dr. Phil for help after being unable to get through to her homeless, drug-addicted son.
Chonte explained that her son, Ira, had a promising future in basketball. He played in college but got caught up in partying and drugs on campus and destroyed his career.
Now homeless, Ira expects his mother to help him, but she believes "reckless behavior" has gotten him to where he is today. Chonte believes Ira needs to realistically look at his situation, but Ira thinks that's a failure to parent.
Chonte explains that her son, Ira, is living life completely dependent on other people. Through borrowing little bits of money here and there, he's able to get by. On social media, however, he looks to be living a lavish life, has a fascinating career, and is living a life that's nowhere near his own.
Ira believes his mom should be doing more to help him get on his feet. She cut him off financially to discourage his reckless behavior. "In my opinion, tough love is just bad parenting," Ira said.
He's not interested in getting help because rehab takes a lot of time and effort, and there are no guarantees anything will get better.
Ira thinks if Chonte would just pay his first three months at an apartment, he could get a job and take over. Chonte is unwilling to do that for a number of reasons, one of which is that Ira does not acknowledge the fact he's a drug addict.
