Woman Documents Her Grandmother’s Journey Toward Medically Assisted Death In Moving Videos

Grandparents are an absolute treasure for those who are lucky to have them in their lives. But when they leave us, they leave perhaps one of the biggest holes in our hearts. One woman wanted something to look back on, so when her terminally ill grandmother made the decision to go through a medically assisted death, Ali Tate began documenting their last conversations through a TikTok series.

Her grandmother, "Bubbie," was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer. "My grandmother decided 30 years ago that if her death would be drawn out and painful, that she was mentally and spiritually committed to medical assistance in death," Ali shared.

Bubbie lives in Canada, where euthanasia is legal. In their series of TikTok videos, Ali and her grandmother have conversations about an array of things, such as Bubbie answering questions about her decision or giving life advice.

Bubbie will make an appointment on a particular day where she will receive an injection that will put her to sleep. Ali does not know when this date will be. "When I'll be ready, I'll know," Bubbie shared. "I came in quietly, I'd like to go out quietly. I'm looking forward to just putting it in, to being dependent, no control."
