Jefferson Sharpnack and his two brothers had recently moved to Ohio to live with their grandmother, Diane. The three boys enrolled in the school's free and reduced lunch program.
Jefferson was excited to celebrate his ninth birthday with his friends at school, but he came home upset and embarrassed — and told Diane he was having the "worst birthday ever."
