North Dakota Man Who Said Wife ‘Face Planted’ On Stairs And Died Charged With Her Murder

A North Dakota man has been arrested and is now being charged with murder in connection to the death of his wife. According to police, Spencer Moen told them that he and his wife, Sonja Moen, had gotten into an argument and she "face planted" on the stairs.

However, he is currently being held at Cass County Jail on charges of murder and and contributing to the deprivation or delinquency of a minor. The 31-year-old father was arraigned Monday and is due back in court for a preliminary hearing in late September.

Spencer Moen had called authorities to the couple's home on August 10. He told police that his wife decided to sleep in the bathtub and never woke up. She was declared dead at the scene.

According to Spencer Moen, the two had returned home, both intoxicated, and got into an argument the night before that turned into a physical altercation. Sonja Moen had bruising on the left side of her face and forehead, and both her eyes were swollen shut. She also had bruising on the back of her hands, which police say normally indicates defensive wounds. Spencer Moen also had bruising on his right hand.

The couple shared three children. A former neighbor of the family shared that they weren't necessarily surprised by Spencer Moen's arrest.

“The kids were always out always playing, and you know the wife was always super nice, waved to her all the time when I’d come home," Brady Zins said. "But my interactions with him were never great, I don’t think I had one normal civil conversation."
