Birthdays are magical, especially in childhood. They are a time to do something special to celebrate the gift of life. Sometimes, the universe steps up and gives you something extra on your big day.
Aspen Brown got a big surprise for her seventh birthday. On September 1, 2023, the little girl was visiting the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, Arkansas, when she spotted something shiny. It turned out to be a 2.95-carat golden brown diamond.
According to a press release from the park, this was the second largest diamond discovered there this year. A 3.29-carat brown diamond was discovered in March. Sounds like it is time to plan a trip to Arkansas, especially since one or two diamonds are found at the park every day.
“Brown was visiting the park with her dad and grandmother to celebrate her birthday,” the press release explains. “Brown picked up a gem about the size of a green pea from a pathway along the northeast side of the search area.” Way to go, Aspen!

Waymon Cox, the assistant park superintendent, called Aspen’s discovery “one of the most beautiful diamonds I’ve seen in recent years.” That is high praise. “Aspen’s diamond has a golden-brown color and a sparkling luster,” they explained. “It is a complete crystal, with no broken facets and a small crevice on one side, created when the diamond was formed.”
