Chris Hemsworth Had To Make Major Lifestyle Changes After Learning Real Alzheimer’s Risks

Since receiving news that his risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease is very high, Chris Hemsworth has been dedicated to making some major lifestyle changes. The 40-year-old Thor actor learned of his high risk while filming Limitless, his National Geographic and Disney+ docuseries, in 2022.

In a conversation with Men's Health magazine, he opened up about the need for more solitude in his life. “I’ve always been pretty consistent with my exercise commitments, but lately I’ve really felt the importance of taking time for yourself without any outside voice or stimulation and making time for stillness,” he explained.

Chris, who has always incorporated physical exercise into his routine, is now also trying to incorporate mindfulness. He shared that he's been focusing on prioritizing his sleep, and even takes ice baths on a regular to help with his well-being.

“My weight fluctuates a lot due to differing roles and also my own interests in regards to challenging my body in different ways,” he explained. “I’m lifting less frequently than I was and I’m incorporating more cardio and endurance workouts which I much prefer than heavy body-building style sessions.”

The actor discovered he has two copies of the gene APOE4, one from his mother and one from his father. That makes his risk for this form of dementia "8 to 10 times more likely."

Chris also made the decision to slow down his acting career, but has made it clear that he doesn't plan on retiring anytime soon. “Most of us, we like to avoid speaking about death,” he shared. “Then to all of a sudden be told some big indicators are actually pointing to this as the route which is going to happen, the reality of it sinks in. Your own mortality.”

He went on to explain that the discovery “triggered something in me to want to take some time off.” “I’ve been completing the things I was already contracted to do,” he said, adding that he plans to “go home and … to have a good chunk of time off and just simplify. Be with the kids, be with my wife.”

Peter Attia, MD, was the consulting doctor on Limitless who helped Chris to make the revelation. He shared that he considers the test result as a blessing. “This will motivate you to take steps today that most people [in their 40s] would never think about until they’re in their 50s or 60s.”

Chris shared that he was initially "floored" after receiving the news. But over time, he realized the advantage he has of having found out early on.

“It was a good kick in the [expletive] and a reminder to do whatever is in my power to give myself the best fighting chance,” the actor shared. “Whatever work I’m doing for my brain health benefits the rest of my body — we turned it into a positive.”
