Antibiotic Saves Five-Year-Old Dog From Mysterious Respiratory Illness Sweeping The US

A dog who fell ill with the mystery respiratory illness that's been plaguing canines all around the US was cured by an antibiotic, and his family is sharing their story.

Californian Becky Oliver told Good Morning America that the family's 5-year-old golden retriever, named Ike, developed a very high fever in September while traveling for dog show competitions. But it wasn't obvious at first that Ike was developing what the family would later find out was the mystery illness.

"He really didn't exhibit any symptoms at the beginning, maybe a cough here or there," Becky explained. "When they took his temperature at the emergency vet hospital in Arizona, they said his fever was 105.3. His color wasn't good."

Ike later developed pneumonia, which landed him in a veterinary hospital. The medical team at one point told the family they didn't think the dog would survive. But that was until the internal medicine veterinarian suggested the dog try an antibiotic called chloramphenicol.

Twelve hours after receiving the medications, Ike was weaned off the oxygen machine and able to return home later that week. John Oliver, Becky's husband, shared that their dog is now back to his normal self. "He looks great … He's jumping around. We still can't believe he's still here."
