A California agency's ruling has ordered Brandon Blackstock to repay his ex-wife Kelly Clarkson millions of dollars, which is said to be for fees he took out of her work on The Voice, the Billboard Music Awards, and other projects of hers. The California Division of Labor Standards Enforcement ruled on November 21, 2023, that the he must pay the singer $2,641,374 in commissions from when he was her manager. Brandon is currently trying to appeal the ruling, having filed on November 30, 2023.
Brandon is requesting a trial "de novo." This means that a judge would hear the case again and each party would have the opportunity to present evidence and witnesses.
Kelly and her legal team accused her ex-husband of unlawfully obtaining work for her between 2017 and 2020, which is when he was her manager. They also accused him of overreaching in his role when he started taking on tasks that were supposed to be handled by the singer's talent agents at Creative Artists Agency.
