Judge Judy Shares The Key Ingredient That Has Kept Her Marriage Alive For So Many Years

Judge Judy (whose full name is Judy Sheindlin) has been married to her husband, Jerry Sheindlin, for nearly 50 years. Recently she spoke to E! News and shared how she has kept her relationship alive for so long. Judy, 81, said there's one "deadly" thing she avoids in order to keep her relationship "hot and spicy": "You don't spend 24 hours together because that's deadly," she shared. She also shared one other key piece of advice: “Jerry just celebrated his 90th birthday and I still like to look at him when he walks in the room — that's a key."

It's not the first time the star has spoken publicly about her long-lasting marriage. In 2021, she talked to People about how she believes appearance matters.

"You know if you fall instantaneously for somebody that means there's a physical attraction," she explained at the time. "And people age, people they change, you can either do it gracefully or you can say 'I give up.'"

In spite of her age, she says that she made the choice to "not give up."

"And I, for myself, I said 'I choose to not give up, I choose to stay fit.' So don't even think about anything but staying looking as good as you can possibly look at this stage in your life," she said at the time.

Judy and her husband actually made the decision to get divorced in 1990, but they missed each other and got remarried shortly after.

In Marlo Thomas and Phil Donahue's book What Makes a Marriage Last: 40 Celebrated Couples Share with Us the Secrets to a Happy Life, Judy revealed that she had wanted her husband to put more effort into the relationship, but she realized that she missed him (and also noticed some improvements).

"He did learn to use a calendar better. He learned to write down: ‘October 21, Judy's birthday. Buy present, card,'" she said in the book, also noting that she missed him.

In the same book, Jerry admitted that he missed his wife immediately. "I missed her presence the very first week that we were separated," he said.

He called it "a strange experience" because he was used to seeing his wife "every single day."

Judy and Jerry share five children from previous marriages. Judy was previously married to Ronald Levy and had two kids with him: Jamie Hartwright, 58, and Adam Levy, 56.

Jerry was previously married to Suzanne Rosenthal, and they had three kids together: Gregory Sheindlin, 60, Jonathan Sheindlin, 57, and Nicole Sheindlin, 56.
