Tony Goldwyn Talks ‘Full Circle’ Moment With Shonda Rhimes That Led To ‘Scandal’ Casting

Tony Goldwyn feels like he owes a lot to producer and screenwriter Shonda Rhimes. In reflection on how his personal connections have created "full circle" moments in his career, he spoke about how his casting for Scandal never would have happened if it weren't for her and a gig he had with Shonda years earlier.

"I had met Shonda several years before, when I directed one of the first episodes of Grey's Anatomy and worked for her for a couple of years on that, and then I didn't see her for eight years and suddenly she thought, 'Wow, Tony'd be an interesting choice for Fitz.' And 'Tony, you want to play the president on my new show?'" he explained. "Wow. 'OK, sure. Why not?' So it's funny how things come around."

The actor portrayed President Fitzgerald Grant III in the TV drama from 2012 to 2018. "It's funny the way life works," he continued. "In my now-pretty-long career, I've learned to sort of just trust the flow of the way things happen."

His connections also led him to his current role, the new district attorney on the crime drama Law & Order. Tony previously worked as a director on the series.

"I did not expect this to happen. But yeah, it's just so nice, the circularity of things," he said, "And the way things come back in the same way as when I did Scandal." The drama series won two Emmy Awards.
