Man Sets Himself On Fire Outside Courthouse Where Trump Hush Money Trial Is Being Held

A man set himself on fire outside of the New York City courthouse where Donald Trump's criminal trial is being held. It's not clear why he set himself on fire, and he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, The New York Times reported. Some reporters, including CNN's Laura Coates, were reporting live on Friday, April 19, 2024, when the incident occurred.

NBC News reported that although the reason the man set himself on fire has not been determined, it appears that the man supports different conspiracy theories, according to law enforcement.

The New York Times reported that the man threw pamphlets in the air before setting himself on fire. The pamphlets reportedly had information about anti-government conspiracy theories on them.

The outlet also reported that an anonymous police department official identified the man as Max Azzarello, 37.

A witness spoke to PIX11 News about the incident and said that prior to setting himself on fire, the man "made statements of a political nature."

The outlet also reported that the man is from Florida and officials think he traveled to New York recently.
