Asher Sullivan, the 10-year-old boy who was pulled into a storm drain in Tennessee on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, has died, his family announced. Asher's dad, Rutherford County Schools Director James "Jimmy" Sullivan, explained that Asher was pulled into a storm drain after a storm in the area. People in the neighborhood were cleaning up the area after the storm, and some kids in the neighborhood were playing in the water outside, according to Jimmy's initial Facebook post.
"Somehow, Asher got caught in the storm drain and was swept under the neighborhood streets. He eventually came out in a drainage ditch and CPR was administered for quite some time," Jimmy explained in a Facebook post.
While his son was being treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Jimmy continued to share frequent updates on his son's condition on Facebook.
Rutherford County Schools held a vigil on May 9. "Please keep the family and Asher's care team in your thoughts and prayers in the days ahead," the district noted on Facebook.

On May 12, Jimmy said that his son was not doing well. "Unfortunately, the worst case scenarios seemed to have come true," Jimmy wrote. "He’s not in imminent danger at this very moment, but recovery does not seem possible."
Through his updates, Jimmy also shared that the family asks for privacy and "all the prayers and positive thoughts imaginable."
On Monday, May 13, Rutherford County Schools shared that many people in the community were planning on wearing blue and green, Asher's favorite colors, to school to show their support for Asher and his family.
As he continued to provide updates, Jimmy said the family didn't "expect Asher to recover," but they also had "some impossible decisions to make in the next few days that no parents should have to face."
On Saturday, May 18, Jimmy shared that Asher had "officially" died that afternoon.
"Our sweet boy did what Asher has always done, he put others first," Jimmy wrote. "No longer did Kaycee and I have to make an impossible decision. Instead, he made it for us while we were out of the room."
"We are broken-hearted, mad, and every other emotion at the same time," he continued in the post.
