Woman Makes History As Oldest Contestant To Compete For Miss Texas USA At 71 Years Old

Marissa Teijo just wanted to fulfill her dream of competing in the Miss Texas USA pageant, but she ended up doing a lot more by making history as the oldest contestant to ever compete, according to the organization.

The 71-year-old woman competed against 74 other women. Though she did not walk away as the winner (Aarienna Ware was crowned on June 22, 2024), she has left a positive imprint on the competition. Nearly a month before the competition, she took to Instagram to share why she signed up.

"I am delighted to be a part of this incredible new experience as a contestant in the Miss Texas USA pageant," a post she made on May 24, 2024 said. "In doing so, I hope to inspire women to strive to be their best physical and mental self and believe there is beauty at any age."

Marissa was eligible to compete in the pageant after organizers recently changed a rule that eliminated the age limits for contestants. Another rule change also now allows for “women who are or have been married, as well as women who are pregnant or have children” to be able to participate.

The contestants were judged based on three categories: personal interview, swimsuit, and evening gown. Though Marissa wasn't crowned, she didn't let that discourage her. She is going on to prepare for the Miss USA competition, which will air live on August 4, 2024.
