Before taking the litter of pups to the Finney County Humane Society, police say they "showered them with love and attention."

Kansas, including the Garden City area, has been dealing with extreme temperatures in July. On the day the puppies were rescued, temperatures in the area were expected to reach the triple digits, reported KAKE.
Police added that after the puppies were rescued, they also earned a new title: "We made them junior 'paw-tners,'" they wrote on Facebook.
The police department hopes that the puppies will be able to reunite with their families, they noted in the Facebook post. The Finney County Humane Society also posted about the 13 puppies, sharing images of each one. "Are these your puppies?" the Finney County Humane Society wrote on Facebook. "13 pups found on 9th and Maple."

Summer weather can be risky for both humans and animals. It's important for animals to have access to shade and water while outside, according to the US Humane Society. The Humane Society also notes that young animals in particular have a greater risk of heatstroke.
Looking out for your furry friends when it's humid is important, too, as high humidity makes it harder for animals to cool themselves down.
"Their body temperature can skyrocket — rapidly — to dangerous, or even lethal, levels," the Humane Society notes on its website.
