When you work as a server in a restaurant, you come across all kinds of people on a daily basis. On any given shift, you might find yourself having to help customers with less-than-desirable table manners, but none of that even remotely compares to this dangerous situation involving a young woman in desperate need of assistance.
Emma was working one of her routine serving shifts at the diner when she noticed a man come in with a much younger woman by his side. They looked like quite the odd couple and Emma immediately took note of how uncomfortable the woman seemed in the man’s presence.

When the couple were seated in Emma’s section by the hostess, she couldn’t help but sigh. Nevertheless, she promptly went and greeted the couple and handed them a couple of menus. In that short interaction, she noticed that the young woman wasn’t taking off her sunglasses, even though they were indoors, and the man barely looked up from his phone.
As Emma stepped away for a moment to allow them a few moments to peruse the menu, she also noticed that the woman was wearing a thick scarf, which seemed odd considering it was a hot, humid day.
When Emma went back to the table to take their drink orders, the gruff looking man told Emma that they would have two sodas. Emma couldn’t help but quickly eye up the young woman who remained silent as she wondered why he had butted in and ordered for his girlfriend.

After Emma spoke to a coworker about the unsettling feeling she got from the man at her table, she went back and took their food orders. Once again, the man ordered for the both of them. He told Emma that his girlfriend would just have a salad, but ordered a sizable pizza for himself.
