Mom Has Some Issues With Dresses Sold For Young Girls At Target: ‘Maybe I’m Overreacting’

A dress sold at Target in the girls' section has gone viral because of a mom's video about whether or not the dress is appropriate for young girls. On TikTok, the mom admitted that she's "a little bit more conservative when it comes to [her] kids' clothes," so she wanted to know what others thought of the dress in question.

The dresses she highlighted in her video were patterned dresses in the girls' section (the mom grabbed one that was a size S 6/7 for girls). She initially thought the dress was cute, but then noticed it had one glaring issue.

The dresses had fairly large cutouts on the sides, she said. "Look at these little slits on the sides of these dresses," the mom pointed out in her video. "Right at the hips on all of these dresses."

The mom acknowledged that she might be "overreacting," but to her, a dress that exposes so much skin in that way is not appropriate for 6-year-old or 7-year-old children.

Some TikTok users thought the dresses were cute and didn't see how the cutouts were a big deal.

"Overreacting," one person wrote. "Both my girls have the blue and white, you can’t even tell much, it’s not that big of a hole. The dresses are so cute."

Another said, "Omg a torsoooooo ," while one TikTok user challenged the mom to "Ask yourself why you think it’s inappropriate. Keep asking why and really digging for answers."

But many TikTok users agreed with the mom and thought that the cutouts seemed unnecessary or inappropriate.

That last one for the boys honestly shocked me! Why does toddler and baby swimwear need to emulate adult fashion?!

"No no," one person commented. "There is no reason for those holes to be there. They should have pockets! Not holes!"

Another wrote: "I think retailers are trying to mature our kids too fast. I agree with mom!"

Two weeks later, the mom shared an update. In the follow-up video, she went back to Target and found that the dress was still sold in stores (and displayed on a mannequin). However, when she searched for the dress online, it was not available for purchase.

The mom mentioned that she wasn't sure if Target removed the dress from its website due to complaints or if it simply sold out. She theorized that it was actually the former rather than the latter. Usually, when shopping on Target's website, you can see if an item is in stock at your local store. Because the website did not display this information about this particular dress, the mom believed that Target decided to pull the dress from its website.

Some TikTok users disagreed with the mom though, and told her that the dress is simply sold out.

"It’s sold out," one person wrote. "It’s also down to just a few sizes at my local store. I love this dress."
