8 Times Susan Sarandon’s Outfits Missed The Mark

Susan Sarandon is an Academy Award winner actress and activist. She prefers to focus on the work and doesn't always play by Hollywood's rule book. She is more comfortable on stages and sets then she is on red carpets.

Perhaps because of this preference, she has made some fashion mistakes over the years. Her performances are so good that fans can forgive her. Here are some of her fashion blunders through the years and her thoughts on why they occurred in the first place.

Susan's Hot Take

Susan is aware that fashion is not her forte. She opened up about this to Elle magazine in 2017. "I enjoy beautiful things but I don't know [if I enjoy fashion]. The Oscars are a chore every time," she mused to Feud costar Kiernan Shipka.

Susan has learned some things over the years. "I've known designers who've been a great help to me, Donna Karan, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Todd Oldham all came of age as I did," she continued.

Still, she would rather being acting than wearing fancy clothes at an event. "I'm not a good movie star in that sense," she concluded.

The Why of It All

In that same Elle interview, Susan revealed how difficult it is to keep up with all of the demands of being an actress. "In the beginning, I didn't have any money," she revealed. "The first time I was nominated for an Oscar, nobody would give me a discount. I would wear vintage dresses I'd find at thrift shops. I got on the worst-dressed lists."

Susan took home an Oscar at the 68th Academy Awards for her work in Dead Man Walking. She also made several worst-dressed lists for her fashion choices. She donned a gold Dolce & Gabbana gown, which matched the Oscar statue. People are still talking about it today.

Oh What a Circus...

There just too much going on in this ensemble Susan wore to the Cirque du Soleil Children's Defense Fund Benefit in 1991. We get that she was going to an event with a circus theme, but this was too clownish for our tastes.

2016 SAG Awards

Placing this look on this list will be controversial. Some people loved it while others hated it. In 2016, Susan walked the red carpet in a cream double-breasted Max Mara suit. It featured cropped pants and she accessorized with a snakeskin clutch and open-toe pumps. The risky part of the outfit was she didn't wear a shirt and instead opted for a black bra. Some people found this sexy while others thought it inappropriate for a 69-year-old woman. We will let you decide.

Susan Wears Prada

A little fringe can be fun, but this jacket isn't our favorite even if it is Prada. It kind of looks like the cheesy tinsel foil fringe you sometimes find in doorways. Susan could have done better in 2017 when attending a private viewing of TV 70: Francesco Vezzoli Guarda La Rai.

Give Peas a Chance

It's understandable fashion was not the first thing on Susan's mind when she attended the Pro-Peace Fundraiser in 1986. She was in her activism mode that night at the Palladium in New York City. Her drab pea-green dress did nothing for her skin tone and its cut made her look shapeless. She is sexier than this dress made her appear.

2015 Toronto International Film Festival

Beige is just so blah and Susan is anything but boring. Yet she wore this drab-looking ensemble to the premiere of The Meddler at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2015. The wrap-style midi dress and long coat's cuts were not so bad but we just wanted some color and spice.

50th Annual Golden Globe Awards

In 1993 Susan attended the Golden Globes with her then-partner Tim Robbins. She wore this loud and colorful embroidered dress. It featured a peek-a-boo keyhole neckline. Let's just say, I doubt her children have ever asked to borrow this one.

A 2023 Premiere

In 2023 Susan attended the premiere of Lakota Nation vs. United States in New York. Her look attempted to be edgy and casual but something about it felt like it was trying too hard. She wore black pants, a black and white striped T-shirt, and a leather jacket. She accessorized with a beret and green high-top Converse shoes, which she left untied. Let's hope she didn't trip.
