What to Know
Martha Stewart tends to avoid political discussions, but her granddaughter recently urged her to speak up. The 84-year-old entrepreneur typically posts about her farm, shares hosting tips, uploads photos of the food she makes, and makes headlines with occasional thirst traps. But on Monday, January 26, she used her platform to speak out against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). On Saturday, January 24, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minneapolis shot and killed protester Alex Pretti. Just weeks prior to this shooting, a different ICE agent shot and killed Renee Good.
In an Instagram post, Martha revealed that her 14-year-old granddaughter warned her that she could no longer stay silent about what’s been happening. She obviously took her granddaughter’s advice seriously, and fans thanked her for it.
Martha shared the message she received from her granddaughter Jude.
In a message to Martha, Jude wrote, “I’m not sure it’s excusable to not be speaking up right now.” In the comments, many fans agreed that Jude was right — and Martha clearly did too. “Grandaughter Jude wrote me a note yesterday I took it to heart and posted the above,” she captioned her post.
Over the message from her granddaughter, Martha wrote, “My granddaughter wrote this to me yesterday she is fourteen and sensitive to what is going on in our country as we all should be.”
She called for change.
Martha’s statement was fairly brief, but she made it very clear that she is not OK with the Trump administration’s actions (even though she did not mention President Donald Trump directly in her post).
She wrote, “I am disheartened and sad each and every day that we cannot demonstrate our sympathy for the beleaguered, that we are told immigrants, which most of us are or descended from are unwelcome, that we cannot show our frustration in peaceful demonstrations and that we can be attacked and even killed by Federal troops.”
She added, “Things must and have to change quickly and peacefully.”
Fans praised Martha for using her platform to speak up about this issue. One fan wrote, “Thank you for speaking up and using your platform you built for good 👏💕🙌👏” Many others also loved that her granddaughter pushed her to say something. “A compassionate, strong child. Thank you for listening to her,” a second fan wrote.
Several people also pointed out that many kids have more empathy and awareness than some adults. “Jude is 14 years old and gets it , but some adults cannot see it ♥️💔” another person commented. Someone else added, “Obviously the children should be running the world… although the adults currently running the world are acting like children.”
