Having a tumultuous relationship with my son is one of my biggest fears. I feel my husband and I pour so much love into him, try to spend quality time with him, and do everything we can to support his dreams (which right now consist of making it to the MLB). But I am sure a lot of parents believe they are doing the same and end up with a fractured relationship. So many things are out of our control as parents when it comes to that. Although I do believe that we are responsible for our relationships with our kids, it is a harrowing reality that sometimes outside forces get in the way of a healthy parent-child relationship.
We may never truly know what drove one California son to brutally murder his own father.
In June 2022, Joseph A. Garcia of Lompoc, California, made the horrifying decision to pour tiki torch oil on his father’s head as he was holding his dog and set him ablaze, according to Law & Crime. Joseph Michael Garcia, 68, received burns on 35 percent of his body and died in the hospital 10 days later from septic shock. The dog survived.
“You brought this on yourself,” Joseph Ashley Garcia admitted to telling his father just before committing the heinous crime, per Noozhawk.
Officers responded to a call about a father and son fighting around 3:30 p.m. June 11.
When police arrived, they found the father’s head and neck engulfed in flames and asked the son to drop to the floor. According to Noozhawk, Joseph Ashley Garcia’s attorney, George Steele, questioned him during a court proceeding in early April 2026, and he testified that he believed his spouse, father, landlords, and others were part of a large human trafficking and child pornography ring. He also claimed he was on methamphetamines and accused his father of having an affair with his husband.
“I woke up in a nightmare to learn about everything I found out about this organized crime network,” Joseph Ashley Garcia said in the video presented in court.
He claimed he woke up that day feeling scared, angry, and suicidal. He also said he was suspicious of the police officers who showed up.
“My thought was these weren’t police officers out there,” said the defendant, who wore a black suit with a light green shirt plus a tie in court. “These were my father’s crime partners.”
Ultimately, he pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, and a doctor reportedly testified that he had been “diagnosed with a delusional disorder,” Noozhawk reported.
On April 13, 2026, however, the jury deemed he was actually sane.
“This verdict reflects exactly what justice looks like for one of the most disturbing cases our office has prosecuted,” said Santa Barbara District Attorney John Savrnoch in a statement, according to Law & Crime. “The jury heard the evidence and held this defendant fully accountable. A finding of first-degree murder with the torture special circumstance sends an unambiguous message that this community will not tolerate acts of extreme cruelty.”
Joseph Ashley Garcia will be officially sentenced in Santa Maria Superior Court on June 6.
