Martha Stewart clearly knows how to get people’s attention. Case in point: she recently took to social media to assert that she was “thinking about releasing (her) nudes.” Understandably, this got a lot of people talking about what she might mean by that.
The most obvious assumption would be that Martha was talking about sharing nude photos. Even though the 85-year-old businesswoman is well-versed in the art of posting thirst traps and occasionally posts sultry photos, this particular post still caught her followers off guard. While some of her followers assumed that her post must be some sort of clever marketing ploy, others simply encouraged her to do whatever she wants to do.
On September 14, Martha shared a selfie on Instagram.
And she captioned the post with, “I’ve been thinking about releasing my nudes.” Understandably, the post got a lot of attention on Instagram because it’s not what anyone was expecting to see when they opened the app on a Monday morning. “Martha I’m still on my first cup of coffee,” one person wrote in the comments. But overall, her followers seemed supportive. “Hey why not??” another commenter added.
Martha puckered her lips in the photo, seemingly showcasing her glossy lips. So, some of her fans assumed that the “nudes” Martha was talking about were not photos at all. Instead, she was probably trying to promote some sort of lip product. But she obviously knew what she was doing when she posted this. “I’m sure this is a lipstick tease, but this caption is marketing gold, honey,” another person wrote in the comments.
Some people were more skeptical.
To them, the post seemed like a “recession indicator.” On Reddit, one person joked, “Tooth paste is $10. Might as well.” Meanwhile, another Redditor wrote, “This is such a weird timeline.”
Martha let her fans wonder about these “nudes” for a bit before sharing an update. In another post shared that same day, Martha admitted that she never planned on releasing any nude photos and instead wanted to promote her lip serums.
She shared an Instagram Reel that showed her applying the product to her lips. In the caption, she revealed that she used her supposed “nudes” as a marketing strategy.
“My ‘nudes’ are just a ‘ploy ‘ they are actually fabulous lip serums to wear day and night to keep your lips as lustrous and soft as your skin !!!!!” she wrote.
Fans called Martha a “marketing genius” for this.
Because before they saw the follow-up post, they truly believed Martha was merely contemplating sharing nude photos with the world. As one fan put it, “D— I thought we were getting Martha unhinged for a moment there.”
But her marketing strategy clearly worked. “Martha you are a marketing genius bc I sent this to a dozen people,” one person commented.
Someone else said, “You’ve always been the queen of marketing, but this has to be the best ad ever.”
“This ad worked on me,” another commenter admitted. “Whatever you’re selling, I’m buyin’,” someone told her.
