The death of crooner Elvis Presley rocked the world of music in 1977, and many fans mourned the loss of the legend. His music touched many lives, young and old.
At the time, who knew that the singer would be missed for decades to come? Now, nearly 40 years since his passing, his legacy lives on.
Over the course of his life, Elvis was known to indulge in unhealthy food, drugs, and alcohol. By 1977, he was near death, suffering from multiple conditions, like an enlarged heart, bowel issues, and depression. His addictions and demons were getting the best of him.
But as many performers say, "The show much go on." Elvis didn't let his illnesses take away from the joy — and money — that came with performing on stage. And in 1977, just six weeks before his death, Elvis ignored his doctor's order to cancel upcoming shows.
He took the stage in Rapid City, SD, and sang a haunting version of "Unchained Melody."
His emotional performance was caught on camera and it looks like he cannot physically hold himself together. Doctors prescribed him an array of painkillers to help him get through his shows. At the time, his body may have been weak, but his voice was still strong and powerful.
Elvis continued to tour for five more shows. Almost two months after this performance, he passed away.
