Checking out our reflection in a mirror is almost an instinctual reaction.
I'm not sure if it's just because the mirror's surface is shiny or because it's an inherent need to look at ourselves if their opportunity presents itself.
I'm not saying I'm above the action — I think we all can admit it's hard not to look in the mirror. You want to make sure you look the way you did when you left the house, or maybe you want to see if you look even better!
It seems like this reaction to mirrors isn't just human nature. A group of people wanted to see what wild animals would do if they saw themselves in a mirror. I don't think they could have ever predicted these reactions!
A plethora of different animals stopped by the mirror and noticed they were looking at themselves. Some reactions were easy to predict, like the gorilla freaking out when he saw himself.
The group of chimpanzees hanging out in front of the mirror seemed very confused. One chimp noticed someone seemed to be mimicking him but, in reality, it was his own reflection!
Perhaps the best reaction of them all was the elephant who couldn't be bothered to care that there was a random mirror. She had other things to think about!
