89-Year-Old Writes In Newspaper He’s ‘Dying Of Boredom’ Since Losing His Wife, Then Gets A Job

These days, most people find jobs that are posted on the internet. However, this former soldier is self-admittedly "old fashioned," and it's not just because he reads the actual paper.

Meet Joe Bartley, an 89-year-old former soldier who posted an ad in his local paper seeking a job. Joe complained about being "bored stiff" since losing his wife two years ago and said he feels like he's in "solitary confinement."

His work wanted ad reads: "Senior citizen 89 seeks employment in Paignton area. 20hrs+ per week. Still able to clean, light gardening, DIY and anything. I have references. Old solider, airborne forces. Save me from dying of boredom!"

Joe, who is "not a television person" wants a job for more than just the boredom factor, but also because he doesn't like the idea of being on benefits and wants to earn his rent himself. Hence his "being old-fashioned like that."

Since posting the ad, Joe already has two job offers. After speaking to the manager of a local café on the phone, Joe is happy to be employed and getting out of the house.

"She said she can give me 20 hours a week," he commented. "I don't know exactly what I should be doing, probably in the kitchen or cleaning of some kind like that. I'm looking forward to it now I've heard her voice. She sounds like a very nice lady to me. I can get a bus from where I live to near her café there, so that'll be nice."

When asked what he will spend his paychecks on, he said mostly rent, but that he'd "like to afford a pint of Guinness."
