Stuart McColl of Scotland found something strange when he was walking through a field on December 12, 2016.
Something blue caught his eye, and when he approached it, he realized it was a balloon. Attached to the balloon was a rolled-up letter. When he unrolled the letter, he was shocked at what he read.
The letter was addressed to the father of the writer, who is clearly a child. As he read the letter, Stuart realized it was written by a young child in foster care to their father. But it wasn't a regular note to a father — this kid's dad had passed away, and the child was hoping that by attaching the note to a balloon, they could get the letter to him in heaven.
In addition to updating Dad on her life, the child sent him a Christmas list.
Before asking for gifts, though, the child wrote some things that are sure to make you cry.
The full text reads:
Hi dad, just writing you a letter to tell you I’m missing you and tell you news! I’m sure you know I’m in foster care cause mom is sick and my ear is blocked from Monday what. Tomorrow we’re leaving. I really miss school and you. I know your up in heaven but are you safe? Oh ya before I go here’s my dream and xmas list.
My dream is for you my daddy to put under my pillow that you wrote.
My xmas list: boots/studs, Astros, rebounder net, new Premier League ball, rubik cube, Real Madrid jersey and shorts
Bye daddy
Love you
It's heartwarming to know this little kid is more concerned about their dad's safety than their own Christmas presents.
The child tells him the most important thing they want for Christmas: "My dream is for you my daddy to put under my pillow that you wrote."
Everyone who has seen the note, of course, wants to help get gifts for this little kid.
Stuart told LittleThings, "It's lovely to see how many people care about this child. I'm starting to think we will never find him or her but that's okay, perhaps whoever is caring for the child wants to protect their privacy as it's such a personal letter after all.
"However, I've had so many kind people offering to donate and buy presents, which is incredible. I've thought long and hard about what best to do next and I've decided that I will set up a 'Just Giving' page, with the money going to 'Child Bereavement UK', a charity Prince William is heavily involved with, which helps children who are in the same position as the child who wrote this letter. I thought that would be a suitable cause.
"IF we ever find this child, then I'll do something special just for him or her.
"I'm going to call the charity tomorrow to see if they would be happy to be associated with the story and if they are I can set up the just giving page."
