Susannah Keane, an 8-year-old from Hobart, Australia, has suffered from cerebral palsy since birth. She takes dance classes now as a form of therapy because it helps her body relax.
Like many little girls, Susannah dreamed of becoming a ballerina when she grew up — specifically, she dreamed of dancing with the Australian Ballet.
This year, her dream came true thanks to the Starlight Children's Foundation. Starlight attests that they "brighten the lives of sick kids" by granting wishes to seriously ill children. Starlight's website says, "When a once-bright light becomes dulled by needles, hospital visits and painful treatments, Starlight helps sick kids forget their illness and re-discover the joys of childhood."
Susannah and her mother, Kylie, knew that a day at the Australian Ballet would be wonderful, but they got even more than they expected.
According to Daily Mail, "On Saturday [December 17], Susannah met the company's top ballerinas for a special dance class and backstage tour of Sydney Opera House before watching their production of Coppélia, a new children's ballet production currently on show at the Opera House."
The ballet company gave Susannah a custom tutu to wear for the day, and they allowed her to dance in their rehearsal.
Daily Mail reported, “Her mother said it was the ‘most magical day imaginable’ and that even though her illness would remain, her smile would, too. At the end of the day, the most important thing was Susannah’s happiness.”
