Two teenage girls recently parked in a clearly marked handicapped spot at Rita's ice cream shop in New Jersey. They proceeded to sit on their car while enjoying their cold desserts.
But then a man who actually needed to use the disabled spot came by…
The following video is a segment from "What Would You Do?" that was set up to see how bystanders would react to such a situation. The female actors, Lauren and Madison, are confronted by Damon, the man in the wheelchair (another actor), who is inconvenienced by the girls' actions. Damon patiently confronts the girls as a group of strangers gather to watch the surprising encounter.
"Excuse me, ladies. You parked in a handicapped spot," Damon says.
"Oh, I know," Lauren replies. "I just don't see what the big deal is."
It's fascinating to see which customers decide to speak up and defend Damon… before the experiment takes a more heated turn.
The StarTribune reports, "To legally use a handicapped parking spot, a motorist must have a state-issued placard, a permit valid for 30 days, or disability plates with attached emblems on both the front and rear of the vehicle. A placard or an equivalent certificate, insignia, or plate issued by another state, a foreign country, or one of its political subdivisions also is acceptable."
