No mother wants to hear it. A few months into Autumn Dunn's pregnancy, doctors noticed the Iowa woman's baby had fluid in her brain, an enlarged heart, and liver issues.
Doctors urged Autumn to terminate the pregnancy and warned that her baby girl would not live more than an hour or two.
Autumn's mother had just passed away, so the couple planned on buying two plots next to each other. She and her husband were ready for the worst.
"Just a few days before, we had my mom's funeral," Autumn said. "So my dad and I were planning on buying two plots so that they could be next to each other. The doctors gave me the option to terminate the pregnancy, but I knew that wasn't an option for me."
She carried her baby girl, Fiona, to term. When Autumn heard the baby's girl first cry, she knew the doctors were wrong.
"Holding her, they were wrong," she said. "It was terrifying. And then I heard her first cry, and I just knew. I just knew she'd be OK."
Autumn was right: Fiona was born with a cyst in her brain, but was otherwise miraculously healthy.
"We went from thinking we were going to have to plan her funeral to, we get to bring her home, and she's healthy, for the most part," the mom said. "She's a miracle."
